My niece (9), nephew (7), and I watched “The Story of Stuff” and the “Story of Bottled Water” yesterday (for the second time, each).  Then we had a discussion about them.  I’m SO impressed with how much they understood about the short animated films (you can seem them at http://storyofstuff.com).

One of the things we talked about (and the movies talk about) is “Manufactured Demand.”  The films point out that in our consumer economy, it’s necessary for corporations to create a demand for their products and so we have advertising (you probably knew this already).  They also point out the three tool advertisers use to manufacture this demand:  fear, fantasy, and lies.

Now my (very smart) niece and nephew are going to check out ads to see which tool they are using to manufacture demand.

Cool stuff!
